The fire glowed warm. Darkness surrounded my little house on the hill. The clock showed early morning. Very early morning. Slowly sipping the first cup of the day while organizing my workday and my troubled thoughts. A thundering heavy metal sound of a sand truck drove by while abruptly interrupting the quiet. The weight echoing through the still air. Once by and then again. The only sound.

Decision to go, or no? Go. Was there ever really a question? As the night slowly shifted to day I stretched a pair of Yaktrax across my running shoes. Seven degrees. Trot trot trot. A mile and half climb. Up. Conditions as my friend JS would say were “sporty.” Sounding more fun than challenging. Yet fun it was. Saucony running shoes a medium blue. A reflection of the color of my lips? The burning in my lungs was the only heat. The cold air, dry. The sun rising.

The sky steely shades of blue. Gray too. The sun making itself known as I turned back to head home. A warmth of nature dribbled over the high hills. Illuminating the earth where it kissed the sky. I took a moment. I stood in humble admiration and let the quiet envelope me. Renewed for the moment. Trot trot trot…
