We wait and wait some more…

Time ticks slowly, sometimes. Mostly I have found it to be accelerating at an alarming rate. A new baby to be born. A new granddaughter is to be born…

Hours are weighted as we wait. Time feeling more suspended than actual. Days blending from one to the other. Tuesday? Wednesday? Who knows and it matters not. There is routine but nothing feels usual. Meals to be had and laundry to be done. Clothing and diapers impossibly small are thoughtfully placed in a changing table. We busy ourselves in preparation. A young family plus two grands…

Days spent with my granddaughter Belle. Nearly 3 years old. An imagination on fire. I can’t get enough of the scenarios she creates. Playdough and pretend. We make short work of stacks of books again and again. A dedicated reader she is. We make rhymes and giggle…

Golden brown silky curls cascade down her back. A likeness to my daughter. I savor the image before me. Time goes quickly…

An evening walk after dinner. My husband and I deciding to leave the sweet sounds floating down the stairs. Bath time…

The heat of the day has lessened. Down their quiet tree-lined street, we stroll. Finding our way to a neighboring park with a trail that borders the perimeter. Friends socializing at a picnic table. Children at play. Slides, swings, and a running game. Sounds of wheels on steel and concrete rise from the skate park. Dogs trotting at leash end. A warning sign about coyotes. The city yet not.

Sun setting in shades of vibrant pinks and oranges. Clouds swirling over the landscape. Another day has nearly passed. We make our way back to the house. With wet hair and pajamas our granddaughter greets us. I drink in her excitement and scoop her up…
